Cleaning Hardwood Floors Tips

The beauty of hardwood floors is undeniable. Gleaming, rich wood can give your home a classic old world feeling or a simple rustic country style wood lets you feel like you are at the cottage. Hardwood floors can be tricky to clean though and they won’t thank you for putting water on them and mopping. If you want to make your floors, last for a long time, you need to take care of them and put them in your house cleaning routine.

To help your hardwood floors last a good longtime they need to be cleaned regularly. Dust and vacuum them weekly. Make sure when you do vacuum that you use only soft nylon brushes and check the height of your vacuum to ensure a good level that will not scrape or scratch the floors.

Make sure you clean up any spills right away. Wipe the spill with a dry cloth and if it leaves a mark, you can try a damp cloth with a wood cleaner. Make sure you use a cleaner specifically for wooden floors though as furniture polish can be bad for the hardwood. Take care with sprays such as hairspray these can be very bad for damaging the varnish or protective coating on your floors.  Whatever you do, do not wax your floors. Modern hardwood has no use for wax and it can be very damaging.

If you have heavy use areas such as under a dining room table use an area rug to protect the hardwood. Anything with hard or pointed legs make sure you put specialty felt buffers on the end of the legs to protect the floor. Place large mats inside and outside the house for dirty shoes.

Whatever you do, do not get the floor wet, hardwood does not like water. Check your plants and ensure they do not drip on the floors. Close windows and doors when it rains. Wipe up any spills right away don’t wait.

Hardwood also does not like bright light. The sunlight can cause a great deal of damage to the wood. Make sure if you have very bright sunspots on the floors that you pull the drapes or blinds to protect the areas exposed.
