Kitchen cabinets are a great tool to store all of your most important kitchen gadgets, dinnerware and appliances so they stay out of the way when you’re busy, and easily accessible when you need them. An important question to ask, however, is how much you clean your kitchen cabinets. Do you just wipe them down? Maybe you lightly work on them during a random house cleaning? Perhaps you don’t clean them much at all?
Kitchen cabinets go through a lot of wear and tear over the years, as they are constantly being touched. With all of this touching, pulling and grabbing, bacteria and dirt is bound to gather up and pose a risk to you or someone else’s safety (especially when they’re in an area where food prep takes place). If you have some free time on your hands and are ready to deep clean your kitchen cabinets, we here at Madam Clean have come up with a guide on how to do so.
Start at the Top & Work Your Way Down
The best way to clean kitchen cabinets is by starting at the top. This is because you can be certain you’ve covered every spot, as well as ensure that any debris that falls from the top of the cabinet is wiped off as you work your way down.
The first thing you’ll want to do when performing this action is vacuuming the tops of your cabinets. Since your cabinets are likely high-up in your kitchen, they won’t be used therefore collecting a lot of extra dust they wouldn’t normally have if they were lower down on the wall. Using a vacuum will help suck that thick dust layer on top of your cabinet clean.
Afterwards, grab a cleaning solution, spray it onto a cloth and wipe the top of your cabinets, slowly working your way down until you reach the underside/the bottom of your cabinet. Make sure you do not spray cleaner directly on the cabinet(s), as some materials may be more sensitive to the chemicals present in household cleaners putting them at risk of getting damaged.
Use a Toothbrush
Are there some hard to reach places when it comes to your kitchen cabinets? Maybe you have some tight spaces or grooves within your cabinets material that need to be cleaned out? Regardless of the reason, a toothbrush is a great way to get rid of the grime that can hide in smaller spaces. Just dip a toothbrush in your cleaning solution and scrub lightly to get rid of any grime and dirt. Be careful to not scrub too harshly, as toothbrushes are often rough and may scratch/damage your cabinet.
Rinse With Water
Regardless of how mild or strong your cleaning products are, chances are they will leave a film if they are not wiped off properly. You don’t want an ugly film left behind on your cabinets after you just went to all this effort cleaning them, so to avoid this rinse the surface of your cabinets with water. To do this, simply dip a cloth into water, dampen it and then wipe down everything you cleaned. This will ensure there is no cloudy or sticky residue left on your cabinets.
Dry if Needed
Certain metals on your cabinet may be susceptible to corrosion (rust), so be sure that these metals are not exposed to water for too long. If you’ve rinsed your cabinets thoroughly and your cabinet contains some metal, make sure you go over the metallic parts with a dry microfiber cloth and ensure the surfaces are moisture-free.
