Fall Cleaning Tips

Fall Cleaning Tips

Fall is fast approaching; you can feel it in the air. Now you start to need warmer clothes to go outside and the days are getting shorter. Not to be a Debby downer or anything, we’re just telling it like it is. With the change in season, this gives you the perfect opportunity to get your house ready before the big freeze! Our team at Madam Clean has some fall cleaning tips to share.

Safety Check

Safety needs to be your #1 priority. This means going around your house and making sure your smoke alarm batteries are working and to replace them. Don’t forget your carbon monoxide detectors as well! An easy way to remember to do this is check/change them when daylight savings happens, twice a year. You should also make sure your fire extinguishers are up to date and not expired.

Furnace Prep

Fall is the perfect time to check on our furnace. You should replace your filter before turning on the heat for winter. If you haven’t had any maintenance done in a while, it might be time to call in a professional to stop by and make sure everything is in tip top shape and running as they should be. You don’t want any surprises this winter!

Window Cleaning

When the temperatures are so lovely outside, this might have prompted you to open your windows and allow the beautiful breeze in. But doing this can also allow things like debris and dust to collect in your window frames. The same goes for your sliding door tracks, shutters, and blinds. Before it gets too cold to have your windows open, get some soap, a microfiber cloth, and wash your windows inside and out. Get in all those little nooks and crannies to get rid of all the dust possible. Take your shutters and blinds and wipe them down to clean them of all dust and debris.

Fireplace/Chimney Cleaning

If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home, regular maintenance is a must! In order to prepare for fall and the crisp cold days, you need to be doing the following:

-clean out the fireplace
-inspect that all doors and shields are properly working
-get the chimney cleaned out
-inspect the fuel

In order to prevent creosote buildup and by the Ontario Fire Code, at least once a year, you need to have your chimney inspected and cleaned. This is particularly important if you are using your wood stove or fireplace multiple times a week during the winter months.

Door/Window Inspection

Being in Canada means that we can have particularly cold winters. Keeping your house warm means making sure it is airtight, so no heat escapes. This is both beneficial for you, your family, and your wallet. You shouldn’t be paying to heat the outside! Take a look at all your windows and doors and check for cracks or other openings that can let your nice, warm heat out and let the cold air in. If or when you do find a flaw, seal it shut with caulk. Preparing in this manor is going to help maximize your heat within your house, allowing you to stay comfortably warm and cozy all winter long.
